三星电子公司成立于1969年，初期主要生产家用电子产品，如电视机和录像机等。七十年代始进入国际市场，逐渐发展成为全球五大电子公司之一，产品也由家电扩展到计算机、通讯等诸多方面。九十年代由于经济方面的原因，三星公司进行了大规模的战略重组。1978年，三星半导体从三星电子公司分立出来而成为独立的实体，1983年起随着成功发展了64KDRAM超大规模集成电路，从此在单一家电类半导体产品基础上发展了许多新的半导体产品，逐渐成为全球领先的半导体厂商。它的半导体产品主要有DRAM、SRAM、闪速存储器、ASIC、CPU和TFF-LCD板等等。
