夏普的历史是从创始人早川德次先生1912年在东京创立金属加工业开始的。1915年早川先生发明了名为“Ever-Ready Sharp Pencil”的金属活芯铅笔，这在当年可谓风靡一时。这就是现在的夏普公司名称及商标的由来。之后，夏普相继开发出日本首台矿石收音机、黑白电视机以及世界首台全晶体管电子计算器等产品，逐步发展成为生产家电产品、通信设备、还有太阳能电池及液晶面板、LED、LSI等电子元器件的综合型电子厂商。
